Man assaults Winnipeg bus driver for refusing to deviate from normal route: police

Police say a 29-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a Winnipeg bus driver who refused to accommodate his special route request.
Winnipeg police say it happened Saturday afternoon near Grassie Boulevard and Lagimodiere Boulevard.
Investigators allege the “agitated” suspect asked the driver to drop him off on a street that wasn’t on the bus’ designated route. When the driver refused, police say the suspect “became enraged and proceeded to assault” the driver.
“The operator stopped the bus, activated his emergency equipment, and opened doors to allow other riders to disembark safely. Once stopped, the suspect threatened to stab the victim and continued to physically assault him,” WPS said in a news release.
Officers arrived, stopped the assault and arrested the suspect, police say.
The 39-year-old bus driver sustained upper-body injuries and was assessed by WFPS members.
Dakota James Ernest Asham was charged with assault with a weapon (grocery bag and contents), assault, and uttering threats (cause death or bodily harm). He was detained in custody.
